Today, International Labor Day is observed with a strong focus on enhancing workers’ rights.

International Labour Day 2024’s theme highlights the importance of maintaining workplace safety and health amid climate change. Countries worldwide, including Pakistan, recognize this day as a public holiday. Trade unions, workers’ organizations, and NGOs hold rallies and demonstrations emphasising workers’ fundamental rights.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed their commitment to labour dignity, recognized their historic struggles and sacrifices, and highlighted the government’s focus on improving occupational safety and health. They praised the workers’ contributions to Pakistan’s progress and committed to advancing their living and working conditions through improved housing, education, healthcare, and social security.

In Pakistan, many labourers live below the poverty line, struggling to fulfil their basic needs. Last year, the government set the minimum wage at Rs 32,000. Pakistan’s initial labour policy, formulated in 1972, established May 1 as an official holiday. It also led to the creation of the Social Security Network, Old Age Benefit Schemes, and the Workers Welfare Fund.

The constitution of Pakistan includes multiple articles concerning labour rights. Labor Day’s inception dates back to the late 19th century, gaining prominence with the labour movement’s growth. In 1894, the U.S. Congress made Labor Day a national holiday, signed into law by.
