On July 1, 2025, Punjab Traffic Police launched Pakistan’s first International Driving Permit (IDP) kiosk at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, streamlining the process for travellers. The IDP, recognised in over 150 countries, translates domestic licenses for legal driving abroad.
The new kiosk, inaugurated by Chief Traffic Officer Dr. Muhammad Athar Waheed, issues IDPs in just five minutes, a groundbreaking service for Pakistanis travelling abroad. Dr. Waheed emphasised its role in modernising traffic services, stating, “This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring easy access for the public, especially at airports.” The facility caters to Pakistanis needing an IDP to drive legally in foreign countries, enhancing convenience at a key travel hub.

An IDP, recognised under the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna Conventions, translates a valid domestic driver’s license into multiple languages, enabling legal driving in over 150 countries. It serves as a supplement, not a standalone document, and is essential for Pakistanis abroad, ensuring compliance with international road traffic laws. The kiosk’s rapid issuance supports travellers facing tight schedules.
The kiosk addresses a critical need for Pakistan’s diaspora, simplifying access to IDPs and boosting travel efficiency. By reducing processing time, it eases the burden on travellers, aligning with Punjab’s digital initiatives, such as the e-license system. The service is expected to enhance Pakistan’s image as a traveller-friendly nation, supporting tourism and expatriate mobility amid economic growth.
