Instagram’s Great Purge has targeted unauthentic accounts, bots and AI-generated content, triggering follower drops across creator and business accounts.

Instagram’s crackdown caused a sharp decline in follower counts for many public-facing accounts. Creators and businesses that depend on the platform for marketing now face pressure to remove inauthentic activity, largely due to Instagram’s Great Purge initiative.

Advised creators to manually audit their followers and remove accounts that show spam comments, no activity or suspicious profiles. Moreover, the impact has pushed users to avoid third-party “auto follower” tools, saying purchased engagement can put original accounts at risk.

Instagram’s recent algorithm update prioritises content shared in direct messages. Due to the Great Purge, Instagram is emphasising genuine engagement; creators can improve interaction by posting relatable content and responding to comments and DMs.

Instagram is also targeting accounts that frequently repost content or rely heavily on AI-generated visuals. As part of the Great Purge, Instagram encourages users to avoid hashtag stuffing and respond to comments promptly after posting.

Instagram may remove or suspend accounts during the crackdown. It is important to protect your profile by being mindful of the risks brought about by the Instagram Great Purge, such as enabling two-factor authentication and removing suspicious linked apps from settings.

Creators and public accounts should focus on original, valuable content rather than rely on automated growth tactics. Ultimately, connecting authentically with your audience is key, especially in light of the Instagram Great Purge affecting marketing strategies for businesses.
