India is elevating its bilateral relationship with Saudi Arabia to a strategic partnership, fostering stronger economic and geopolitical ties. The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met in New Delhi to underscore the beginning of a monumental journey in establishing an expansive economic corridor. This historical commencement was acknowledged during their dialogue following the conclusion of the G20 leaders’ summit hosted by Modi.
During the meeting, Modi highlighted this corridor’s significance in connecting India and Saudi Arabia and facilitating economic cooperation and digital connectivity across Asia, West Asia, and Europe. The initiative, which is more extensive than just a railway or cable, is projected to integrate India’s large market with Western countries, counterbalance China’s extensive infrastructure investments, and boost the economies of the Middle East.
Broadening Trade Ties and Geopolitical Implications
A modern rendition of the Spice Route is in the offing, potentially reshaping trade dynamics and geopolitical relationships globally. This initiative was unveiled, with G20 leaders, including the US and the European Union, taking part to foster connections through railways, ports, data networks, and hydrogen pipelines. Notably, the endeavour might also pave the way for developing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, a significant stride given Saudi Arabia’s historical non-recognition of Israel.
The unfolding developments also marked a significant move with an Israeli delegation attending a UNESCO meeting in Riyadh, a first in the history of diplomatic engagements between the two countries. US President Joe Biden hailed This partnership as “historic” during the launch event, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasizing its extensive reach and potential.
This initiative represents another milestone for India and Saudi Arabia in fortifying their bilateral relations, with trade engagements already soaring to $42.8 billion last year as per Saudi’s investment ministry. Modi accentuated the crucial role of this partnership in securing peace and stability in the region, stating, “For India, Saudi Arabia is one of the most important strategic partners.” This sentiment was echoed by the Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, highlighting discussions on energy security, trade, investment, and defence during the leaders’ meeting.
