Indian authorities imposed new restrictions ahead of Eid ul Adha, including bans on road prayers and tighter controls on animal sacrifice in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered officials to allow animal sacrifice only at designated sites and barred Eid prayers on roads, according to Indian media reports.

The state also banned public slaughter activities and directed authorities to increase patrols near religious areas.

Officials said the measures were aimed at maintaining law and order and enforcing hygiene regulations during the festival, which Muslims across India will observe on Wednesday.

In Delhi, minister Kapil Mishra warned of strict action against illegal animal transport, unauthorised slaughter and violations of animal protection rules. Authorities also limited sacrifices to approved locations.

Eid ul Adha, observed during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah.

Muslims traditionally mark the occasion with prayers, family gatherings and livestock sacrifice, with meat distributed among relatives and people in need.
