Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), supported President Dr Arif Alvi’s choice to delay convening the National Assembly, deeming it fully warranted on Tuesday.
While speaking to the media at Adiala jail, Rawalpindi, Khan highlighted his party’s election victory yet noted the denial of reserved seats to PTI. He asserted that despite challenges, PTI emerged stronger, not weaker, after the May 9 events.
Khan disclosed his efforts to communicate with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), labelling the action as “treason” by critics. He clarified that being in jail limits his communication, yet he managed to dictate a letter to the IMF, emphasizing that political stability is crucial for economic steadiness. This letter, he mentioned, would incorporate inputs from party leadership.
Contrastingly, PML-N’s senior leader, Senator Ishaq Dar, criticized President Alvi in Islamabad, accusing him of constitutional breach.
Dar referenced the constitutional mandate for a post-election National Assembly session within 21 days, which President Alvi overlooked. Highlighting the role of the speaker in oath administration, Dar condemned the session’s postponement as a detrimental precedent, undermining constitutional integrity.
