The Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) expressed deep concerns over the recent malicious campaign targeting the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), Justice Aamer Farooq. This sentiment was conveyed in a statement released by the president of IHCBA, Naveed Malik. Although the association didn’t directly name anyone behind the campaign, they condemned such acts.

Background of the Situation

Justice Farooq has been presiding over the appeal of Imran Khan against a trial court’s decision in the Toshakhana case. Khan, the former prime minister, was previously convicted in this case, and he recently made allegations against Justice Farooq, suggesting that the justice aimed to prevent him from participating in general elections. Interestingly, the chief justice is set to hear the final arguments in this matter. It’s also worth noting that through legal representatives, Khan sought to move all his cases from the IHC to provincial high courts.

PTI’s social media campaign against IHC’s Justice Aamer Farooq termed ‘contempt of court’.

Support for Justice Farooq and Calls for Action

The IHCBA highly regards Justice Farooq for his commitment to honesty, competence, and impartial, merit-based judgements. The statement from the association expressed concern that this campaign seems to be a calculated move with the intent to tarnish the reputation of an esteemed judge, subsequently eroding public trust in the judiciary. The association remains steadfast in their determination to thwart such malicious intentions.

They are appealing to the relevant authorities to identify and take decisive action against the instigators, ensuring they face legal consequences for their actions. In parallel, the Ministry of Law has echoed these sentiments, condemning the campaign against Justice Farooq. Per PPI reports, the ministry has attributed the campaign to PTI, urging political parties to respect state institutions.
