The International Cricket Council (ICC) has resolved the controversy surrounding next year’s Champions Trophy 2025. After India refused to send its team, the ICC endorsed Pakistan’s “tit-for-tat” hybrid model.
According to a report by India Today, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reached an agreement. Pakistan will host the group matches of the eight-team tournament. The high-profile India vs. Pakistan match will occur at a neutral venue. If the Indian team qualifies, the final might take place in Lahore.
The boards also settled on the 2026 T20 World Cup arrangements. The league-stage match between India and Pakistan will occur in Colombo, not India. While the PCB won’t get financial compensation for these changes, it has secured the rights to host an ICC Women’s tournament after 2027.
All parties have welcomed the agreement. It ensures the smooth planning and execution of these events while addressing logistical and geopolitical concerns.
The 2025 Champions Trophy will run from February 19 to March 9. Eight teams will be divided into two groups, and the top two from each group will advance to the semifinals and the final.

Historically, political tensions have affected cricket ties between India and Pakistan. The nations have only competed in ICC events since their last series in 2012-13. The decision to adopt a hybrid hosting model follows last year’s Asia Cup precedent, which also used a hybrid approach due to similar issues.
Matches between India and Pakistan draw significant global attention, boosting cricket’s viewership and revenue. For instance, the 2023 World Cup match between the two drew 173 million viewers on Indian TV and 225 million digital views. The rivalry is a major draw, highlighting the importance of these matches in global cricket.
The ICC’s approval of the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy offers a pragmatic solution to the ongoing cricketing disputes between India and Pakistan.
