The accident occurred at a railway crossing in the Mureed Sipio village bordering Hyderabad and Matiari district, more than 15 kilometres from the Hyderabad railway station, where the train had made its last stop.
The Lahore-bound Fareed Express hit the truck carrying labourers from the Kolhi community when the latter vehicle was passing through the unmanned crossing. It remains unclear why the truck driver, who was also killed in the accident, could not spot the train.
The collision destroyed the truck and also damaged the train’s engine, which was replaced before the train resumed its journey after an hour. No passenger on the train was reported as injured.
SP Hyderabad rural Rai Mazhar confirmed that 11 people had died in the accident. He also confirmed that the crossing was not equipped with a gate.
The victims were residents of the Sabu Rahu village. They were returning after a meeting with their landlord in the Darya Khan Nahiyon village when they met with the accident.
The deceased were identified as Sawan Nahiyon, Chandar Kolhi, Jagsi Kolhi, Devau Kolhi, Harichand Kolhi, Bhiryo Kolhi, Jeemal Kolhi, Basu Kolhi, Shama Kolhi, Amarshi Kolhi and truck driver Qadir Lashari.
