The new Hulk Hogan Netflix documentary revisits the life of one of professional wrestling’s most famous figures, presenting a more layered portrait of the man who helped turn WWE into a global brand. While Hulk Hogan built his public image as an American hero inside the ring, the documentary Hulk Hogan: Real American examines the contradictions, scandals, and personal costs behind that legacy.

For decades, Hogan stood at the centre of wrestling’s rise into mainstream entertainment. His larger-than-life persona made him one of the most recognisable names in sports entertainment. But the Netflix documentary moves beyond that image and explores the gap between the character audiences celebrated and the person behind it.

Through interviews recorded before his death in July 2025, Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, reflects on his career, personal choices, and the moments that complicated his reputation. The documentary uses those reflections to show how fame, pressure, and image management shaped both his success and his public downfall.

One of the documentary’s most notable moments comes when Hogan openly addresses steroid use. After years of avoiding the issue or publicly denying it, he admits he began using steroids shortly after finishing school. He says that, at the time, many in the wrestling environment viewed the practice as normal.

The film also highlights Hogan’s admission that he lied in interviews under media pressure. He now describes those decisions as mistakes that affected how the public remembers him. By including those confessions, the documentary adds a more candid and self-critical dimension to his story.

Netflix also revisits several controversies that damaged Hogan’s public image, including personal scandals and private leaks that drew intense media scrutiny. The documentary explores how those episodes reshaped the way fans and critics viewed a man once seen as the face of professional wrestling.

Another part of the series examines Hogan’s wider cultural reach, including his connections to high-profile public figures such as Donald Trump, who appears in the docuseries. That element underlines how Hogan’s fame extended beyond wrestling and into broader American pop culture and politics.

The documentary also presents a more personal perspective through Hogan’s family. His son, Nick Hogan, shares details about the final months of his father’s life, describing health complications after surgery and the resilience he continued to show during that period.

Rather than trying to restore Hogan’s image, Hulk Hogan: Real American appears to focus on understanding the full complexity of his life. It presents Terry Bollea not simply as a wrestling icon, but as a deeply influential and deeply flawed public figure whose story cannot be separated from either his achievements or his controversies.
