Honda and Nissan have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore establishing a joint holding company and a potential major integration between these two leading Japanese automakers.

The newly signed MOU marks the start of discussions to merge their business operations to enhance their competitive edge in the automotive industry. This strategic move is part of a broader effort to accelerate the journey toward a zero-traffic fatality and carbon-neutral society, a commitment underscored by another MOU signed with Mitsubishi on March 15.

Nissan’s President and CEO, Makoto Uchida, commented on the development, stating, “Today marks a pivotal moment as we initiate discussions on business integration that could significantly impact our future. By leveraging the strengths of both Honda and Nissan, we aim to offer unmatched value to our global customers and create innovative ways for them to experience our vehicles—achievements that would be unattainable independently.”

Honda’s Director and Executive Officer, Toshihiro Mibe, reflected on the potential of this partnership: “The automotive industry is undergoing significant environmental changes, and creating new mobility value through the combined resources, knowledge, talents, and technologies of Honda and Nissan is crucial. While we are just beginning our exploratory phase and have not yet committed to business integration, our goal is to determine a viable path forward by January 2025. We aim to lead the market by harnessing a unique synergy that only our combined efforts can activate.”

The strategic collaboration represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing current and future challenges in the automotive sector. Both companies are committed to exploring innovative solutions that could redefine the industry.
