The HBO reboot of the Harry Potter franchise has generated significant buzz, and Chris Columbus, director of the first two films (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets), recently shared his thoughts on The Rest Entertainment podcast. He commented on August 27, 2025, focusing on viral set photos that show Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter and Nick Frost as Hagrid filming what appears to be a scene in Diagon Alley.
Columbus expressed mixed feelings about the reboot, particularly noting the reuse of the Hagrid costume he designed for the original films. “I looked online, and there are photographs of Nick Frost as Hagrid with the new Harry Potter,” he said. “He’s wearing the exact same costume that we designed for Hagrid. Part of me wondered, “What’s the point?” I expected everything—the costumes and the atmosphere—to change. Instead, I saw more of the same.
Despite his initial surprise, Columbus clarified that he found the reuse flattering, stating, “It’s very flattering for me, because I’m like: That’s exactly the Hagrid costume that we designed.” He described the experience as “exciting” but admitted to a sense of “déjà vu,” given the similarities to his earlier work.
No Jealousy, Just Pride
Columbus emphasised that he harbours no jealousy toward the HBO reboot. “I’m so beyond it. I did it. I’ve done that; it’s time to move on,” he said, reflecting on his approach to franchises. He cited his decision to step away from sequels like Gremlins 2 and his limited involvement in the Harry Potter series after the third film, Prisoner of Azkaban, which he produced.
“I feel like I’ve done it … I’m really proud of those films—the first three that I was involved with, and I’m moving on,” Columbus added, underscoring his satisfaction with his contributions to the Wizarding World.
HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot: What We Know
The HBO series is currently in production and will likely premiere in 2027, though the release date remains unconfirmed. Viral set photos show Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter and Nick Frost as Hagrid, filming a scene likely set in Diagon Alley, where Harry shops for Hogwarts supplies. The reboot aims to adapt J.K. Rowling’s novels with a fresh cast and extended storytelling format, leveraging HBO’s reputation for high-quality production.
The Harry Potter franchise remains a cultural juggernaut, with the original eight films grossing over $7.7 billion worldwide. The HBO reboot aims to reimagine the story for a new generation, but Columbus’s comments underscore the challenge of striking a balance between nostalgia and innovation. His approval of the costume design, paired with his critique of its familiarity, reflects broader fan discussions about the reboot’s direction.
