Haq Do Tehreek’s (HDT) leader, Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman, stated that the provincial government reneged on its agreement with HDT last year, and the agreement successfully concluded a month-long Gwadar protest.
The press conference on Sunday, attended by Naveed Kalmati, the President of Gwadar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and other HDT leaders, served as a platform for Rehman’s warnings of another potential protest if the government fails to uphold the agreement, emphasizing that the party wouldn’t compromise on the constitutionally guaranteed rights of Makran’s people.
Rehman criticized the government for its apparent disinterest in addressing the problems the province’s residents faced. Accusing an unnamed nationalist party of disrupting the negotiations and stalling the agreement’s execution, he expressed frustration at the government’s lack of action on the agreement’s demands. In addition, he pointed out the ongoing operation of the illicit trawler mafia in Balochistan’s waters and the unregulated drug trade corrupting Makran’s youth.
Despite government claims of Gwadar’s future as Pakistan’s economic hub, Rehman argued that the residents were still denied their basic rights and necessary facilities, even noting the lack of anti-snake vaccines in local hospitals. Furthermore, Rehman mentioned the 16 cases lodged against him and 250 HDT workers by the government, expressing skepticism about receiving justice.
