Rockstar Knew GTA VI Would Miss 2025, Targets May 2026 Release

Rockstar Games internally anticipated a delay for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) well before its official May 26, 2026, release date, moving away from the initial 2025 target. The shift, driven by the game’s scale and a focus on sustainable development, keeps fans waiting amid minimal updates since the 2023 trailer.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported on Bluesky that Rockstar developers long doubted the 2025 release due to the project’s complexity and tight timelines. “Nobody at Rockstar believed Fall 2025 was realistic,” Schreier noted, citing the studio’s shift from the “brutal crunch” of past titles like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.

While some overtime persists, the work environment has significantly improved, prioritising employee well-being over rushed deadlines. This cultural change contributed to the expected delay, finalised after the 2023 trailer’s record-breaking debut.

Fan Anticipation and Minimal Marketing

Since the trailer, GTA VI updates have been scarce, fueling fan speculation. Former Rockstar developers suggest the game’s massive hype, with the trailer garnering millions of views, requires little additional marketing. The official delay to May 2026 has sparked scepticism about meeting even this new target. Yet, the franchise’s cultural dominance keeps anticipation high, with memes like “We got __ before GTA 6” trending online.

Rockstar’s internal foresight of a GTA VI delay, now set for May 2026, reflects a commitment to quality and healthier development practices. Despite sparse updates, the game’s colossal anticipation endures, proving silence is a powerful marketing tool. Fans eagerly await the next chapter in the iconic franchise.
