ISLAMABAD: Sports journalists’ welfare will receive government support, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar said on Thursday.
Tarar made the pledge at a ceremony marking World Sports Journalists Day 2026. He asked sports journalists.
A committee will submit proposals on welfare, professional development and promotion of sports journalism. The minister said sports journalism helped promote healthy competition, sportsmanship and positivity in society.
He said sports could not reach the public effectively without journalists covering events and reporting them from the field.

Tarar said recognition of sports journalists was important because the profession required sustained work, field reporting and close monitoring of sporting activity. He referred to the conferment of Tamgha-i-Imtiaz on senior sports journalist Mohi Shah during his tenure. He said the honour represented the wider sports journalism fraternity in Pakistan.
The minister said PTV Sports was Pakistan’s only television channel broadcasting the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. He said the government ensured the telecast across the country to encourage young people and promote healthy competition.
Later, Tarar administered the oath to the newly elected body of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Sports Journalists Association and cut a cake to mark the day
