Google AI Overviews showed chatbot-style replies for some search terms, including “disregard,” “ignore”, and “stop,” instead of normal results for some users, according to The Verge.
The issue appeared after Google’s AI-focused Search updates and affected command-like words that users often search for as dictionary terms. The Verge reported that “disregard” returned responses such as “Got it” or similar assistant-style acknowledgements.
The behaviour appeared on Safari for some users, while Chrome showed ordinary dictionary results. It also said traditional links, including dictionary results from Merriam-Webster, appeared lower on the page below the blank space.
Other terms produced similar AI-style replies. Searches for “ignore,” “stop”, and “remember” triggered responses that treated the words like instructions rather than search queries.
Google’s support pages describe AI Overviews as AI-generated snapshots that appear in search results with links for further reading. The company describes AI Mode as a more advanced AI search experience that can handle follow-up questions and broader reasoning.

The Verge reported that Google removed AI Overviews for some affected terms by the afternoon of May 22. Google had not issued a public comment on the glitch at the time of that report.
