Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced a $15 billion investment over five years to establish an AI data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
This represents Google’s largest commitment in India, the world’s most populous country with nearly a billion internet users. Kurian highlighted at a New Delhi event that this will be the largest AI hub Google is building outside the United States, forming part of a global network spanning 12 countries. The campus will begin with a 1-gigawatt capacity and scale to multiple gigawatts.
This significant investment aligns with Google’s $85 billion global expenditure on data centres this year to meet surging AI demand. The new facility will house thousands of computing chips dedicated to AI workloads and support major services like YouTube, which has India’s largest user base and the dominant Android ecosystem.

Officials from Andhra Pradesh expect the creation of approximately 188,000 jobs as a result. Major players like Microsoft, Amazon, and business magnates Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani are also heavily investing in Indian data centres, underscoring the country’s rising stature as a technology and AI hub.
Despite this growth, Google faces antitrust scrutiny in India over its business practices, alongside a lawsuit concerning YouTube’s AI policies. Nevertheless, this investment demonstrates Google’s confidence in India’s market potential. It will further boost India’s digital economy, enhance infrastructure, generate employment, and position India as a global competitor in AI innovation.
