Ali Amin Gandapur, from PTI but ran independently in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, clinched the chief minister role on Friday.
Earlier today, the KP Assembly saw Gandapur face off against PML-N’s Dr. Ibadullah Khan.
Significantly, PTI’s Imran Khan had backed Gandapur, giving him a strong chance.
Interestingly, Gandapur garnered support from Sunni Ittehad Council members, while PPP and PTI-P backed Dr. Ibadullah.
Choosing independence, Gandapur didn’t join SIC despite its PTI alignment. Previously, he served as federal minister from 2018 to 2022 and in the KP Assembly from 2013 to 2018.
Moreover, Gandapur is a Gomal University graduate. Conversely, Dr. Ibadullah was a National Assembly member till 2023 and chaired the Communications Committee.
Following Wednesday’s session, the KP Assembly elected PTI’s Babar Saleem Swati and Suriya Bibi as speaker and deputy speaker, with 89 and 87 votes, respectively.
