Paris, France: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged G7 finance ministers on Monday to follow a sanctions regime aimed at cutting financing to Iran’s “war machine.”
Bessent made the call during a G7 finance ministers’ meeting in Paris. The meeting focused on Iran, trade imbalances and critical raw material supply chains.
The US wants G7 partners to align with sanctions that target Iranian oil revenues and related financing. The push follows recent US moves on secondary sanctions.
Bessent also called last week’s US delegation trip to China “very successful.” President Donald Trump led that visit.
The Paris talks also covered critical minerals, supply-chain risks and energy security. France held the rotating G7 presidency for the meeting.
