Jimmy Carter, the former U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, died at 100.

Jimmy Carter’s foundation reported that he passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, with family by his side.

Carter, born in Plains and once a peanut farmer, served as the longest-lived U.S. president, a title few foresaw when he disclosed his brain cancer diagnosis in 2015.

From 1977 to 1981, Carter’s presidency focused on human rights and social justice. Notable accomplishments included the Camp David Accords with Israel and Egypt. However, he also faced significant challenges, such as the Iran hostage situation and an energy crisis. Defeated by Ronald Reagan in 1980, Carter’s post-presidential activities bolstered his reputation through various global humanitarian initiatives.

Over six decades, Jill and I had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend.

But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well. pic.twitter.com/irknhZ6CJY

Founding the Carter Center in 1982, he pursued diplomacy and justice, earning the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. Known for his Christian faith and integrity, Carter remained active in his community, teaching Sunday school into his 90s. Despite health issues later in life, including brain cancer treatment in 2015, he continued his public service.

Leaders worldwide have praised Carter’s legacy. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi recognized his humanitarian efforts, particularly his role in the 1978 Camp David Accords. Tributes from U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and current President Joe Biden highlighted his dedication to a life of dignity and service.

Carter’s major policy moves, such as returning the Panama Canal to Panama, have left lasting impacts. His wife, Rosalynn, passed away in November 2023, and Carter, appearing frail, attended her service, reflecting their long life together. The Carters’ legacy of service and commitment to bettering the world remains influential.
