The government on Friday filed an application in the Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging a local court’s orders for registration of First Information Report (FIR) against 21 people, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, over Lahore’s Model Town incident.
On Aug 16, an additional session judge in Lahore ordered the framing of murder charges against the Sharif brothers and 19 others over the June violence which took place near the residence of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief, Dr. Tahirul Qadri, leaving at least 14 of his supporters dead.
The case was registered on the complaint of the administration of Dr. Qadri’s Minhaj ul Quran (MuQ), with 21 people, including PM and CM Punjab nominated as accused.
Today, Federal Information Minister, Pervaiz Rashid, filed an application to the LHC, stating that orders for registration of the murder case ‘are unconstitutional’
The court admitted the plea and later adjourned the case till Aug 25.
