The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has initiated an inquiry into the Toshakhana case involving President Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, and former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has formally requested the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to provide relevant records and evidence regarding the Toshakhana case. The JIT will also collect records of the accused individuals to prepare a supplementary challan based on the evidence provided.

After obtaining the necessary documents from NAB, the JIT plans to record statements from all accused individuals.

Presidential Immunity and Toshakhana References

Previously, President Asif Ali Zardari was granted presidential immunity in the Park Lane and Toshakhana references. However, the Accountability Court halted proceedings against him, citing Article 248 of the Constitution,

Judge Nasir Javed issued a verdict stating that criminal proceedings cannot be initiated against a sitting President. The court’s decision emphasized that under Article 248, no case or criminal proceedings can proceed against the President during their term in office.

This immunity led to the suspension of references against President Zardari, pending the conclusion of his tenure.

Allegations in the Toshakhana Case

The NAB filed a reference with the Accountability Court against Zardari, Nawaz Sharif, and Yousuf Raza Gilani, alleging that they failed to deposit luxury vehicles and valuable gifts from foreign leaders into the state treasury, as required by law.

The FIA’s current investigation aims to uncover further details and bring accountability. This inquiry is part of broader efforts to ensure transparency and adherence to legal procedures regarding state protocols.
