The federal government is considering abolishing the Saturday weekly off to restore a six-day work week in government offices.

The Cabinet Division has sought recommendations from all ministries. It will be referred to the federal cabinet for a final decision. Previously, observing a five-day workweek in government offices did not achieve the desired outcomes.

In 2022, the federal cabinet approved two-day weekly holidays in government offices under an energy conservation plan. The country still faces a severe energy crisis, which usually spikes during summer.

The Cabinet Division mentioned that the cabinet session would consider abolishing the Saturday off-day after the Eid ul Adha holidays.

The previous Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) )-led government approved the restoration of the Saturday weekly off in government offices as part of the energy conservation plan.

Moreover, protests by government employees forced the then federal government to reverse its May 2022 decision to restore a six-day work week.
