A shark attack at Egypt’s Marsa Alam resort killed one tourist and injured another, the environment ministry reported on Sunday. The statement did not specify the victims’ nationalities.
Shark sightings are rare in the Red Sea.
The ministry stated that the attack happened in deep waters outside the designated swimming area near the northern Marsa Alam jetties. Authorities have banned swimming from these jetties, closing them for two days starting Monday.
Marsa Alam is famous for its colourful coral reefs, diverse marine life, and beautiful beaches.
In June 2023, a tiger shark killed a Russian tourist in Hurghada, another Red Sea city north of Marsa Alam.
Last month, a tourist boat capsized in the same area, killing four and leaving seven missing.
