KARACHI, Sindh: Traders have reported receiving fake Rs 5,000 notes in city markets, prompting a business association to urge buyers and sellers to carefully inspect high-value currency.

Karachi Electronics Dealers Association President Rizwan Irfan said several businessmen in the Karachi Electronics Market had received counterfeit notes during transactions. The reported cases have raised concern among traders and customers.

Irfan said fraudsters were using different methods to pass the fake currency to businesses and members of the public. He advised people to check Rs 5,000 notes before accepting them during purchases or other cash transactions.

The State Bank of Pakistan lists several security features for a genuine Rs 5,000 note. These include a Quaid-i-Azam watermark, an electrotype “5000” watermark and a partially embedded security thread carrying the denomination.

The note also contains colour-changing optical variable ink. The crescent-and-star design changes between green and gold when viewed from different angles, according to the central bank.

The report did not cite an official statement from the State Bank, the police or the Federal Investigation Agency confirming the scale of the counterfeit currency circulation. It also did not disclose the number or total value of the fake notes detected.
