Dr. Birbal Genani, a well-known eye specialist and former senior director of health for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), was shot dead by unknown assailants on Thursday.

The incident occurred as Dr. Genani and his assistant lady doctor were driving from Ramswamy to Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The attackers targeted their vehicle near Garden interchange on the Lyari Expressway, causing Dr. Genani’s car to lose control and crash into a wall.

Dr. Genani was killed on the spot, while his assistant sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to the hospital. The police and rescue officials quickly arrived and transported the injured woman to the hospital for treatment. According to the police, there was only one bullet mark on the vehicle, and they are currently investigating the incident

In a CCTV footage of the attack that surfaced online, Dr. Genani’s car can be seen moving uncontrollably before hitting a wall. The police have termed the murder a “target killing” and launched an investigation into the incident. Speaking to journalists, SSP City Arif Aziz stated that the exact reason behind the murder is still unknown.

The police are recording the statement of the injured lady doctor traveling with Dr. Genani at the time of the attack. The police personnel have already launched an investigation into the murder and are trying to determine the motive behind the attack.

Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori has noticed the incident and requested a report from the additional inspector general of Karachi police. He expressed deep sorrow over the murder of Dr. Genani, who was a respected figure in the medical community. The murder of Dr. Genani has once again raised concerns about the security situation in Karachi and the increasing incidents of targeted killings in the city.
