Eric Dane cause of death ALS has been confirmed following the passing of the Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria actor at the age of 53.
Dane died on February 19, 2026, after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. His family shared the news in a statement, saying he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones.
The actor had publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, though he first noticed symptoms roughly a year and a half earlier.

Born Eric William Melvin Dane on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, he pursued acting after high school and built a steady career through guest roles on television.
His breakthrough came in 2005 when he appeared as Dr Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy. The role earned him the nickname “McSteamy” and made him a fan favourite. He later starred in The Last Ship and portrayed Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, showcasing his range in more dramatic roles.
Dane also appeared in films such as X-Men: The Last Stand and Marley & Me, as well as several later television and streaming projects.
Beyond his screen performances, Dane became known for speaking openly about living with ALS. His advocacy highlighted the urgent need for improved research and treatment options.
