A dominant England cricket team delivered a statement performance on the opening day of the fourth Ashes Test, bowling out the Australia cricket team for just 152 on Friday and seizing early control at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Captain Ben Stokes made immediate use of favourable conditions after winning a crucial toss on a lively green surface. Under overcast skies, England’s fast bowlers extracted sharp movement and applied relentless pressure from the outset.

Australia’s top order collapsed quickly. Travis Head fell for 12, Jake Weatherald managed 10, and Marnus Labuschagne departed for six as the new ball proved difficult to handle. Steve Smith looked set to steady the innings but was bowled for nine by Josh Tongue, sending England’s travelling supporters into full voice.

The damage continued after lunch. Usman Khawaja scored 29 before edging behind, while Alex Carey made 20 and Cameron Green contributed 17 in another disappointing outing. Michael Neser offered brief resistance with a top score of 35, but wickets continued to tumble.

Tongue led the attack with an impressive five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5 for 45. Gus Atkinson provided strong support after returning to the side, justifying England’s decision to recall him following the Adelaide Test.

Australia have already retained the Ashes after dominant wins earlier in the series, but England arrived in Melbourne determined to restore pride after heavy criticism of their preparation and discipline. Missing injured quick Jofra Archer, the tourists responded with intensity and precision.

By the close of play, England held a clear advantage, having exposed Australia’s batting on a surface expected to improve. The visitors will now look to build on their momentum and turn early dominance into a rare Ashes victory on Australian soil.
