Elon Musk’s wealth is estimated at $908 billion in the 2026 Forbes 400, keeping the SpaceX and Tesla chief atop America’s richest-person ranking for a fifth consecutive year.
Musk is not currently a trillionaire. He briefly became the first person Forbes valued above $1 trillion on June 12, when SpaceX began trading on Nasdaq following its record-setting initial public offering. His fortune later fell below that threshold.
Forbes calculated Musk’s 2026 Forbes 400 fortune at $480 billion more than a year earlier. He leads second-ranked Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, worth an estimated $378 billion, by $530 billion. Alphabet co-founder Larry Page ranks third at $278 billion.
America’s 400 richest people are collectively worth a record $8 trillion, up from $6.6 trillion in 2025. The minimum fortune required to enter the ranking rose by $600 million to a record $4.4 billion, according to Forbes, which based the list on valuations and share prices through September 4.

Artificial intelligence also reshaped the lower end of the ranking. Ten Forbes 400 members are under 40, up from four last year, while seven young newcomers built their fortunes through AI companies.
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, 37, is the richest newcomer at an estimated $25.5 billion. Steven Hao, the 30-year-old co-founder and chief technology officer of Cognition, is the youngest member, with a $5.8 billion fortune.
