Elon Musk Condemns Arson Attack on Tesla’s Berlin Factory as ‘Extremely Dumb’. Elon Musk publicly rebuked an arson attack at Tesla’s Berlin factory, labelling the act and its perpetrators as “dumb.”
The attack, orchestrated by a group identified as the Volcano Group, aimed to protest against Tesla’s environmental and labour practices. Despite the fire not directly impacting the Tesla facility, it caused significant damage to an adjacent electricity pylon, leading to a halt in production and anticipated financial losses for Tesla in the “high nine-digit Euro range.”
Musk, utilizing X (formerly known as Twitter), articulated his frustration, employing the German term “extrem dumm” to highlight the folly of the act, suggesting it was either borne out of extreme stupidity or manipulation by those with distorted environmental objectives.
The Volcano Group, through an online manifesto, took responsibility for the fire, claiming it was a direct action against Tesla’s production process, citing environmental degradation and labour exploitation among their concerns. This act resulted in temporary power outages and production disruptions at the Tesla plant.
The local state police have initiated an investigation based on the group’s claims. Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Michael Stuebgen assures a stern response to such sabotage under the law.
Tesla’s Berlin factory has faced opposition from environmental groups over its expansion plans, which critics argue could lead to deforestation. Nonetheless, organizations like Robin Wood have explicitly distanced themselves from the arson.
Despite the setback, with about 100 individuals protesting in a nearby forest, the factory—which has an output of around 500,000 vehicles annually and plans to double its production capacity—expects to resume operations next week. While anticipated to be considerable, the disruption’s financial implications have yet to be fully quantified.
