The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) voiced their support for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding elections after the constituencies’ delimitation. In a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner, Sikander Sultan Raja, MQM-P emphasized their reservations about the 2017 census and appreciated the decision to base delimitation on a new census. They highlighted the significant population growth in Karachi and insisted on proper representation in the assemblies. Additionally, the party called for a renewal of electoral rolls.
Jamaat-e-Islami Expresses Concerns Over Election Schedule Ambiguity
On the contrary, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) expressed concerns about the ambiguity in the election schedule. The party believed the ECP should have initiated the consultation process with political entities earlier. They emphasized that the premature dissolution of assemblies could deprive the Pakistani public of representation. The JI recommended that along with the delimitation process, the ECP should have released the election schedule to clear any uncertainties.
ECP’s Stand on the Delimitation and Future Consultations
In response to the parties’ concerns, CEC Raja assured that the ECP aims to conclude the delimitation swiftly and proceed with the polls. Both delimitation of constituencies and renewal of electoral rolls will be executed simultaneously. The ECP plans to re-consult all political parties regarding the election code of conduct. Uncertainties regarding the election’s timing spurred the ECP’s decision to engage political parties in a consultative process. With the recent approval of the 7th Population and Housing Census 2023, fresh delimitations are constitutionally required, pushing the possibility of elections beyond the 90-day mark post the dissolution of assemblies.
