The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) appointed Mohsin Naqvi as the caretaker chief minister of Punjab on Sunday.
The election commission has also announced Mohsin Naqvi’s appointment as the interim chief minister of Punjab.
When the parliamentary committee could not come to a decision, the appointment of the interim chief minister of Punjab was brought before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
To choose a name for the interim chief minister of Punjab, senior ECP officials met under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja today.
The opposition put forward the names of Mohsin Naqvi and Ahad Cheema. In contrast, the PTI-PML-Q alliance proposed Naveed Akram Cheema and Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera for the position of caretaker CM.
On Friday, the parliamentary committee, made up of representatives from the government and the opposition, could not agree on a candidate for the position of interim chief minister of Punjab.
Raja Basharat, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stated to the media that the opposition lawmakers disagreed with the suggested names by the government.
Malik Ahmed Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), declared during a press conference that the candidates put forth by the administration are not qualified for the position of Punjab’s acting chief minister. He lamented the inability of politics to resolve the issue involving the interim chief minister of Punjab.
The issue of the nomination of Punjab’s caretaker CM was referred to the election commission after no agreement could be reached.
