The breakthrough in AI translating thoughts into text is offering new hope to people who cannot speak. In a recent study reported by the BBC, a paralysed woman was able to see her internal monologue appear as written sentences on a screen.

The 52-year-old participant lost clear speech after a stroke nearly two decades ago. During the study, she communicated by forming words in her mind rather than speaking them aloud.

Researchers surgically implanted a small array of electrodes into the front lobe of her brain. These electrodes captured neural signals generated when she imagined speaking. An AI-powered computer system then decoded those signals into readable text in real time.

The research was conducted at Stanford University in California. Three additional participants living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also took part.

The system works by detecting electrical activity produced by neurons. When the participant imagines forming words, her brain generates distinct patterns of activity.

The AI model analyses these patterns and converts them into sentences displayed on a screen. Importantly, researchers stress that the technology does not read spontaneous thoughts. It interprets intentional signals linked specifically to imagined speech.

This distinction is critical. The system activates only when the participant deliberately attempts to communicate.

The development represents one of the most advanced steps toward practical brain-computer interfaces for communication. For individuals with severe paralysis or neurodegenerative diseases, the ability to translate neural signals into text could restore independence.

While further research is needed before widespread clinical use, the results demonstrate how artificial intelligence can bridge the gap between thought and expression.
