The launch of Dubai’s driverless taxi service took a major step forward as Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum arrived at the World Government Summit 2026 in a fully autonomous taxi. The moment formally signalled the start of Dubai’s driverless transport programme.

Officials described the arrival as a milestone for smart mobility in the emirate. It highlights Dubai’s focus on adopting advanced transport technologies to support daily travel.

Authorities confirmed that 100 driverless taxis will begin operating next month. This rollout marks the first phase of the wider programme to modernise public transport across Dubai.

The initiative aims to make transport more efficient and accessible. Officials see autonomous vehicles as a key part of the city’s future mobility plans.

How the autonomous taxis work

The driverless taxis rely on artificial intelligence and advanced sensor systems. These technologies allow the vehicles to analyse their surroundings in seconds.

The system enables independent driving decisions without human intervention. Officials say this approach supports safer and more reliable journeys.

Sheikh Hamdan highlights future mobility vision

In a message shared on social media, Sheikh Hamdan said Dubai’s mobility future would be smarter, safer, and more efficient. He added that the project would improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.

The project forms part of Dubai’s broader strategy to adopt sustainable and intelligent transport solutions. Officials see autonomous mobility as essential to the emirate’s growth and global competitiveness.
