Draymond Green’s Ejection Rate Without Curry Validates Gobert’s Point

An altercation between Draymond Green and Rudy Gobert sparked a discussion about Green’s performance without teammate Stephen Curry.

Rudy Gobert, the Minnesota Timberwolves player, commented on Green’s dependency on Curry, a sentiment echoed in Jordan Poole’s reported insult where he referred to Green as Curry’s “expensive backpack.” Gobert’s statement, “Every time Steph doesn’t play, he doesn’t want to play without his guy Steph, so he does anything he can to get ejected,” adds to this narrative.

Analyzing Draymond Green’s track record reveals that he has been ejected 11 times since 2019 while playing for the Golden State Warriors, with seven incidents occurring when Stephen Curry was not playing. Interestingly, the first ejection in this period involved an altercation with Rudy Gobert, then with the Utah Jazz, suggesting Gobert’s familiarity with Green’s behaviour.

The Impact of Stephen Curry on Draymond Green’s Performance

Draymond Green is known for his confrontational style, as evidenced by compilations of his most violent acts during games on social media. His tendency towards conflict is a well-established aspect of his on-court persona.

Stephen Curry’s presence on the court appears to have a calming effect on Green. Curry’s offensive prowess alleviates some pressure on Green, allowing him to focus on less confrontational defending. This suggests that while Green’s aggressive nature is a constant, Curry’s gameplay positively influences Green, making him a more effective player.

Luego del incidente, Rudy Gobert comentó que "sabía que [Draymond Green] se iba a hacer expulsar, porque siempre lo hace cuando Steph no juega."

¿Es esto cierto?

In conclusion, while Rudy Gobert’s observations about Green’s dependency on Curry have some merit, it’s also true that Green’s aggressive style is part of his fundamental approach to the game, albeit modulated by Curry’s influence.
