Death toll from Layyah toxic sweets: At least 19 dead so far

Five more people, hospitalized after consuming toxic sweets in Layyah, died in Nishtar Hospital Multan during the last 13 hours, raising the death toll to 19.

Hospital administration has confirmed the death of five more patients admitted in the facility, where 11 more are being treated.

Sources said the incident took place when Umar Hayat, a resident of Chak 105/TDA brought sweets from a nearby sweetshop located at Chowk 111 on the birth of his grandson.

After eating toxic sweets five persons died on the spot while several others fell unconscious.

The deceased and fainted persons were rushed to a local hospital for medico legal formalities and treatment.

The police have registered a case and started investigations.
