Filmmaker David Fincher’s “Squid Game” spinoff is no longer moving forward at Netflix after years of development, entertainment outlet The Playlist reported on Aug. 6.
The Playlist cited sources close to the filmmaker. The project used “Heckler” as its working title. Writer Dennis Kelly, who created the British series “Utopia,” had joined the development team.
Sources described the project as an American version of the South Korean franchise. The production team expected to film it in the United Kingdom.
The report linked the project’s loss of momentum to Netflix management changes and shifting franchise plans. Fincher also moved to other films, including “The Adventures of Cliff Booth.”

Netflix never announced the proposed series, its title or a production schedule. The company did not answer The Playlist’s request for comment.

Actor Cate Blanchett’s appearance in the “Squid Game” finale had fueled spinoff theories. She played an American recruiter in Los Angeles.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk denied that the scene introduced Fincher’s project. Netflix’s Tudum confirmed Blanchett’s role but did not connect it to an English-language series.
