Portugal defender Diogo Dalot defended Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal drew 1-1 with DR Congo in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K opener.
The draw drew sharp criticism of Portugal’s performance, with Ronaldo also targeted after failing to score. Many fans described the result as an upset by DR Congo.
Dalot said the team had discussed social media before the tournament and had cut itself off from online criticism.
He said Ronaldo knew how to handle pressure at this level. Dalot added that Portugal’s view of their captain had not changed and that Ronaldo remained ready to help the national team.
The 27-year-old also said Portugal remained united after the disappointing start. He said the squad was ready to do everything needed to win.

Dalot described the early setback as something Portugal could use to move forward. “The earlier the setbacks, the easier it is for us to kill that theme and move on,” he said.
Portugal will face Uzbekistan in their next Group K fixture on Tuesday.
