Two hikers struck gold in the Czech Republic’s Podkrkonosí Mountains, discovering a treasure trove valued at over $340,000.

The New York Post reported that the find includes 598 gold coins, jewellery, and tobacco bags, now held by the Museum of East Bohemia. This remarkable discovery sheds light on historical practices and regional history.

The hikers found the 15-pound collection, hidden for over a century, while exploring a forest’s edge in February 2025. The Museum of East Bohemia announced the discovery last week, revealing coins from 1808 to the early 19th century, likely buried after 1921. The currencies hail from France, Belgium, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary, with marks indicating use in former Yugoslavia (1918–1992).

Miroslav Novak, the museum’s head of archaeology, expressed awe, saying, “When he opened it, my jaw dropped.” Based on current precious metal prices, the trove’s estimated value starts at 7.5 million Czech Crowns ($340,000).

Experts are investigating the treasure’s origins, a common practice since prehistoric times when people buried valuables during uncertain periods. Theories suggest the trove may belong to a Czech fleeing Nazi occupation in 1938, a German fearing post-1945 displacement, or even retreating Nazis hiding assets from Russian forces in World War II. Museum director Petr Grulich dismissed the likelihood of stolen goods from an antique shop.

The $340,000 treasure trove unearthed by hikers in the Podkrkonosí Mountains captivates historians and the public alike. As the Museum of East Bohemia investigates its origins, this discovery underscores the enduring allure of hidden riches and their historical significance. The lucky hikers await their share, while the story continues to unfold.
