Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey adaptation has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association, giving the filmmaker another adult-rated summer release after “Oppenheimer.”
The rating means younger viewers will need a parent or adult guardian to attend the film. The Motion Picture Association has not disclosed the specific reasons for the classification.
The rating stands out because major summer studio releases are often shaped for PG-13 certification to reach a wider audience. “The Odyssey,” based on Homer’s epic poem, features violent battles and mythological encounters.
