China’s advanced chip production boost is accelerating as leading semiconductor firms expand capacity to meet rising demand for artificial intelligence. According to a Nikkei report, major Chinese chipmakers are scaling up advanced manufacturing to strengthen domestic output.

Companies, including Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) and Hua Hong Semiconductor, are increasing production of higher-performance chips. Several Huawei-linked manufacturers are also participating in the expansion effort.

The expansion centres on advanced process technologies, including 7-nanometer (nm) and potentially 5-nm performance levels. These chips play a critical role in artificial intelligence workloads and high-performance computing systems.

Sources cited by Nikkei indicate that China aims to raise production of relatively advanced chips to 100,000 wafers within one to two years. Current output reportedly remains below 20,000 wafers.

In addition, China has outlined a longer-term objective of adding 500,000 wafers of manufacturing capacity by 2030. These targets highlight a broader strategy to strengthen domestic semiconductor capabilities and reduce reliance on external supply chains.
