Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi Lands in Attock Jail After Recent Arrest

Former Punjab Chief Minister and sitting President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who was apprehended once again by Islamabad’s law enforcement agencies in Lahore, has now found himself in Attock Jail.

Upon relocating to the capital, Islamabad’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) sanctioned his incarceration, spanning 15 days. This was executed under the guidelines of the Pakistan Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). The directive issued by the capital’s administration emphasized potential concerns about the law and order scenario in the presence of Pervaiz Elahi, given his influential role within PTI.

The Arrest Amidst Political Tensions

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s name features prominently in a list of PTI stalwarts who have faced legal ramifications under the MPO. This action follows the unrest and disturbances that erupted on May 9, putting the party under significant scrutiny.

Intriguingly, Elahi’s arrest occurred mere hours after the Lahore High Court (LHC) instructed the National Accountability Bureau to grant freedom to the PTI leader while explicitly directing officials to abstain from detaining him in any subsequent issues.

However, the swift action by the capital’s police force, who detained the PTI chief as per the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order’s edicts on Zahoor Elahi Road, seemed to counteract the court’s orders. The LHC, being cognizant of the situation, had tasked senior police dignitaries, including the DIG Operations and the additional registrar for security, to guarantee Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s unhindered and safe passage back to his residence.

It’s noteworthy to shed light on the genesis of this ordeal. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) initially apprehended Elahi, stemming from his alleged reluctance to furnish necessary details to the bureau. This pertained to an investigation focusing on amassing assets that appeared disproportionate to known sources of income. Not only was Elahi under the lens, but this probe also extended to his kin, including his son, Monis Elahi, and other close family members.
