ChatGPT Adult Mode to Launch in 2026 After Age-Detection Tests

OpenAI will roll out ChatGPT’s adult mode only after it successfully tests an AI-based age-prediction system that automatically filters content based on a user’s age.

The company is currently evaluating the model across multiple countries to ensure it can reliably identify users under 18. Until OpenAI confirms the system’s accuracy and safety, adult-only features will remain unavailable.

According to reports, ChatGPT’s adult mode is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2026.

Unlike traditional platforms that rely on age-confirmation pop-ups or self-reported data, OpenAI is developing a more advanced solution. The system aims to infer a user’s likely age based on behaviour, usage patterns, and contextual signals, rather than asking users to declare their age.

OpenAI believes this approach could provide stronger safeguards against underage access while improving user trust.

OpenAI has acknowledged that accurate age detection remains complex. As a result, the company has chosen to delay the release of adult content until the technology is sufficiently reliable.

Until then, explicit or adult content will remain restricted on ChatGPT. OpenAI wants to ensure full compliance with global safety regulations and child-protection standards before expanding content boundaries. The move also aligns with increased regulatory scrutiny worldwide over online age verification and digital safety.

Once launched, ChatGPT’s adult mode may allow discussions around mature topics that are currently limited. These could include areas such as human sexuality, adult relationships, and sensitive mental-health conversations.

While explicit material may become accessible, OpenAI is expected to maintain clear guardrails to prevent abuse and misuse. The goal is to offer a more nuanced and age-appropriate AI experience, not unrestricted content.

The announcement follows broader industry experimentation with age-restricted AI tools, including similar efforts by xAI. If OpenAI’s system proves effective, ChatGPT’s adult mode could set a new standard for responsible age-aware AI interactions.
