OpenAI has officially released ChatGPT 5.5, introducing a major upgrade designed to support more complex, agentic AI tasks across coding, research, data analysis and workplace productivity.
The San Francisco-based AI company announced GPT-5.5 on April 23, 2026, describing it as a model built for complex real-world work. OpenAI said the model can write code, research online, analyse information, create documents and spreadsheets, and move across tools to complete tasks.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 is more efficient than earlier models because it can understand tasks sooner, use tools more effectively, require fewer retries and continue working until a task is complete. The company said this makes the model better suited for multi-step assignments that involve planning, troubleshooting and tool use.
One of the biggest upgrades is expanded context. GPT-5.5 supports up to 400,000 tokens in Codex and up to 1 million tokens through the API, allowing users to work with large codebases, long documents and complex datasets.
OpenAI also highlighted stronger computer-use capabilities. GPT-5.5 can operate software, navigate tools and assist with screen-based tasks. The model scored 78.7% on the OSWorld-Verified benchmark, according to OpenAI’s published results.
The company described GPT-5.5 as its strongest agentic coding model so far. It performs strongly in writing, debugging and editing code, and can help developers build larger features from natural-language instructions.

OpenAI said GPT-5.5 also improves online research and data analysis, making it useful for users who need support with multi-part tasks such as reviewing information, generating reports, creating spreadsheets or preparing documents.
The release reflects OpenAI’s broader push toward agentic AI, where models do more than answer prompts; they help users complete full workflows across multiple tools. ChatGPT 5.5 is now available in ChatGPT and Codex, with GPT-5.5 Pro aimed at heavier workloads and more demanding tasks
