Character.AI has recently updated its platform with new features to safeguard teenage users. This release includes a specialized AI model and parental controls to ensure a safer online interaction environment.

Character.AI changes are part of broader efforts to address concerns over the AI chatbots’ impact on children’s mental health.

The company has launched a distinct version of its AI model tailored for users under 18, restricting romantic or suggestive content and strengthening content filters. This dedicated teen model is designed to detect and block attempts to bypass these restrictions, including editing chatbot responses to introduce prohibited content. Additionally, suppose a conversation veers into sensitive topics like self-harm or suicide. In that case, the AI will prompt a link to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, offering teens quick access to professional help.

Starting next year, Character.AI will roll out new parental controls. These tools will allow parents to monitor how much time their children spend on the platform and which chatbots they interact with the most. Character.AI collaborates with teen online safety experts to develop these features, ensuring effective and appropriate measures.

Character.AI’s Content Moderation Enhancements

Alongside safety upgrades, Character.AI is also purging AI imitations of copyrighted and trademarked characters to tighten content control further. This step addresses previous concerns about the platform’s inappropriate use of popular characters.

The update extends beyond just safeguarding measures. All users, not just teenagers, will receive reminders to take breaks after extended chat sessions to help manage screen time effectively. These reminders are part of Character.AI’s commitment to preventing screen time addiction.

Clear Disclaimers on AI Interactions

Character.AI is enhancing its disclaimers to clarify the artificial nature of its chatbots, especially those mimicking professionals like doctors or therapists. A new, more detailed warning emphasizes that these AI characters are not licensed professionals and should not replace actual medical or professional advice.
