CHAKWAL, Punjab: Police arrested a prayer leader in the Chakwal child rape case after a pistol in his waistband discharged and injured him during an alleged escape attempt.
A police team attempted to arrest the suspect on July 3, as reported by Chakwal Police. Police said he tried to flee, fell and suffered an injury when the weapon discharged.
Officers subsequently took the suspect into custody. Police did not provide details about his medical condition.
Wanhar Police Station registered a first information report on July 28 under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which covers punishment for rape. The girl’s father filed the complaint.
According to the FIR, the 10-year-old girl and her five-year-old sister attended Quran lessons at a mosque in Munara village, Kallar Kahar tehsil.

The complaint alleged that the prayer leader sent the other children home but told the older girl to remain behind.
Her father accused the suspect of sexually assaulting her in a room and threatening her with a knife if she disclosed the incident.
Earlier, police had registered the case and begun searching for the suspect. Authorities had not announced a court date by July 31.
