Cape Verde drew 2-2 with Uruguay in World Cup Group H on Sunday at Miami Stadium, earning their second point in their first World Cup campaign.
Kevin Pina gave Cape Verde the lead in the 21st minute with the country’s first World Cup goal. He struck a long-range free kick past Fernando Muslera after Rodrigo Bentancur fouled Telmo Arcanjo.
Uruguay turned the match before halftime through Maxi Araujo and Agustin Canobbio. Araujo headed in from close range in the 44th minute after Manuel Ugarte’s header hit the post.
Araujo then set up Canobbio in first-half stoppage time. Canobbio finished after Araujo headed Ugarte’s free kick into his path.
Helio Varela equalised around the hour mark after coming off the bench. He intercepted Mathias Olivera’s crossfield pass, moved the ball past Muslera and scored into an empty net.
The goal brought Cape Verde level after coach Bubista made changes in the 58th minute. Jamiro Monteiro nearly put the Blue Sharks ahead soon after, but his shot went over the bar.
Uruguay pushed for a late winner as the match opened up. Canobbio had the best late chance, but he fired over after breaking through on goal in the final minute.
