Inspired by US President Donald Trump’s threats, an Ottawa entrepreneur’s “Canada is Not for Sale” hats gained massive attention.
Liam Mooney, founder of an Ottawa-based design firm, created a hat with the slogan “Canada is Not for Sale” in reaction to Trump’s tariff threats and his suggestion that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state.
The hats gained national attention after Ontario Premier Doug Ford wore one during a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other premiers in Ottawa last week. The meeting discussed Trump’s promise to impose tariffs on Canadian imports.
According to Mooney, tens of thousands of orders have been placed online since Ford publicly displayed the hat. He designed the hats as a creative way to respond to President Trump’s rhetoric with a message of nationalism and unity.
“It’s an opportunity to bring people together from all sectors of society, regardless of political affiliation,” Mooney told Reuters.
Tariff Concerns Amid Political Turmoil
Trump’s proposed tariffs could severely impact Canada’s economy while increasing the price of oil and other goods in the U.S. The threats come during a time of political instability in Canada. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau is set to resign in March after nearly a decade in power, and the opposition Conservatives are currently leading in the polls ahead of the upcoming federal election.
Mooney revealed that the idea for the hats emerged after watching an interview with Doug Ford on Fox News. During the segment, the host suggested that annexation with the U.S. would be a “privilege” for Canada. Ford firmly rejected the notion, stating, “Canada is not for sale.”
In a video address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump demanded “respect” from Canada and previously referred to Trudeau as “Governor.”
“Our sovereignty is threatened when our dignity is disrespected,” Mooney stated. “But we have allies and friends worldwide who are ready to stand with us and defend our values.”
The “Canada is Not for Sale” hats have become a symbol of unity, sparking conversations about national pride and resilience in the face of external pressures.
