Box Office Recap: “Spider-Man” Swings to the Top, “No Hard Feelings” Debuts Strong

This weekend, North American cinemas saw a replay of last week’s top three films, with “Spider-Man” superseding “The Flash.”

The fresh releases, the bawdy humor of “No Hard Feelings” and Wes Anderson’s latest, “Asteroid City,” couldn’t displace last weekend’s highest-grossing films, even though they had a strong showing within their respective genres.

Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” emerged as the weekend winner, pocketing $19.3 million according to Sunday’s figures from Exhibitor Relations. This takes its domestic earnings to a staggering $317 million, and with international screenings, its worldwide total has hit $560 million.

This film, a sequel to 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” continues the tale of the biracial superhero, Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore.

Holding steady at second place is Pixar’s animated tale of immigration, “Elemental,” with a weekend collection of $18.4 million, bringing its total to $65 million.

“Warner Bro.’s The Flash,” now in third place, generated $15.2 million this week after debuting at the top spot last week, thus totaling $87.6 million in its box-office collection.

Jennifer Lawrence’s R-rated “No Hard Feelings,” another product from Sony, opened this weekend in fourth place, pulling in $15.1 million.

Despite the array of sequels and spin-offs monopolizing the box office, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” from Paramount managed to secure fifth place, earning $11.6 million.

“Asteroid City,” from eccentric director Anderson and Focus Features, stood next after a limited release last week, collecting $9 million. Despite being considerably less than “Spider-Man’s” opening weekend score of $120 million, Gross suggests this is a “commendable opening for a specialty independent comedy.”

Rounding out the top 10 were:

  • “The Little Mermaid” ($8.6 million)
  • “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($3.5 million)
  • “The Blackening” ($3 million)
  • “The Boogeyman” ($2.5 million).
