KARACHI: A section of an unfinished Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bridge collapsed near Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Thursday, killing a construction-site guard, Rescue 1122 said.
Falling debris trapped the guard. Rescue teams recovered his body and completed their search, with officials reporting no other casualties or people trapped.
Authorities identified the collapsed structure as part of the BRT construction project. Rescue officials did not immediately establish the cause.
The Red Line BRT project has faced repeated construction delays. In April, the Frontier Works Organisation resumed work on Lot 2 along University Road after authorities ended the previous contractor’s contract.

That construction package covers the section between Mosamiyat and Numaish. A separate package, Lot 1, runs from Airport signal to Mosamiyat.
Work on the transport project began in 2022. Its original June 2024 completion deadline passed, but construction was not completed.
